How amoxicillin works?

Amoxicillin is a penicillin antibacterial. It inhibits bacterial cell wall synthesis, in thisis case, the cell wall can't protect the bacterial cell from high internal osmotic pressure leading to cytosis and death of the bacteria.

It is available as 250 and 500 milligrams tablets or capsules and 250 milligrams dispersible scored tablet for pediatric use and also 125 milligrams per 5 milliliters powder for oral suspension to be reconstituted with filtered water.

  • Acute otitis media.
  • Streptococcal tonsillitis.
  • Sinusitis bronchitis.
  • Pneumonia.
  • It is also used in case of infection due to helicobacter pylori in combination with omeprazole and metronidazole or tinnitus.
  •  Also used for leptospirosis and no severe cutaneous anthrax
  • Used for typhoid fever.
  • if ciprofloxacin is contraindicated and if the strain is susceptible amoxicillin is also used in complete treatment following parental therapy with penicillin or cephalosporins.

Amoxicillin dosage
1- The usual dosage for leptospirosis tonsillitis is an infection due to helicobacter pylori

For children

50 milligrams/kilograms/ day in two divided doses
For adults
2 grams per day in two divided doses.
2- Dosage in severe infections such as typhoid or suspicion of resistant pneumococci pneumonia or a Titus.

For children

80 to 100 milligrams/kilograms/day in three divided doses.
For adults
The dose is three grams per day and three divided doses.

Duration of treatment

  • Otitis media is five days.
  • Tonsillitis six days.
  • Leptospirosis seven days.
  • Pneumonia sinusitis.
  • Cutaneous anthrax for 7 to 10 days.
  • Helicobacter pylori infection 10 to 14 days.
  • Typhoid fever for 14 days.

Contradictions

Do not administer to

  • penicillin-allergic to patients or patients with mononucleosis

Administer with caution to
  • patients allergic to cephalosporins because cross-sensitivity may occur
